Go Ave 26

How can community engagement better inform first/last mile solutions that are low-cost and high-impact?

Go Ave 26 is a project that supports pedestrians and public transit users near the Lincoln/Cypress Station on the Metro Gold Line. This Metro stop and several nearby bus lines support the neighborhoods of Elysian Valley, Cypress Park, and Lincoln Heights. While this transit hub provides necessary transportation between many different areas, the station area and nearby intersections lack clarity and safety. Avenue 26 is car-centric area, is extremely difficult to navigate, and represents typical conditions throughout Los Angeles. This year-long project features community engagement and physical design interventions that make getting to and from public transit hubs along Avenue 26 easier, safer, and more welcoming.

Go Ave 26 features temporary design installations along Avenue 26 between Figueroa and the Metro station that were informed by the community outreach and engagement process. The improvements include: seating and shading in Lacy Street Neighborhood Park; wayfinding signage that points to the Metro station, bus stops, and local destinations; murals on the underpass walls that create a sense of play and light; and patterns on the sidewalk, fences, and poles that reclaim space for pedestrians along this busy, car-dominated corridor. 

Go Ave 26 is funded by TransitCenter and in partnership with government entities LA Metro, LADOT, Caltrans and advocacy groups including LA Walks, Investing In Place, and LA County Bicycle Coalition.  This project has the opportunity to inform Metro’s station area plans as it relates to first/last mile strategies and investments, hopefully serving as model through LA County.
