Community Housing

Building housing stability through community stewardship

LA Más cultivates land and housing stewardship by fostering class solidarity among neighbors. Our mission is to collaborate with working-class communities of color in Northeast Los Angeles to create alternative forms of affordable housing, ensuring residents can remain in the neighborhoods they call home. Through popular education, policy advocacy, and hands-on technical and financial support, we steward housing in partnership with residents and community members.

In October 2024, LA Más acquired its first community housing project. Learn more - check out our official announcement, watch this 4 min video, and read this LA TImes feature.

Our approach

  • To preserve existing affordable housing units, we work with property owners looking to sell and engage with current residents to purchase housing and take it off the speculative market.

  • We partner with existing residents for all housing preservation projects and engage our  community of working class neighbors to vet our portfolio of community housing projects.

  • Through workshops, postcards, lawn signs, and cultural events, we make alternative housing models more accessible. Our quarterly NELACHA meetings always include popular education.

Impact

  • Private and public resources are directed to Northeast LA, ensuring longtime residents have the option to remain in their community.

  • Community members gain a deep understanding of community housing models and how to participate in them.

  • LA Más demonstrates alternatives to traditional affordable housing by facilitating various models featuring financing innovation, strategic partnerships, meaningful resident decision making, and leadership development support for community governance.

  • Affordable housing is preserved for working-class communities of color in Northeast LA.

NELACHA: Building Community-Stewarded, Affordable Housing

The Northeast LA Community Housing Alliance (NELACHA) is a coalition of residents and allies who are united in effort to combat displacement and preserve housing in Northeast LA for working class neighbors. Together, we pursue a variety of strategies to preserve existing housing, build new housing, and advocate for community-stewarded models.
