Hollywood Pop

How can a yearlong park installation blur the lines between public and private while inspiring ideas for future public realm investments for Hollywood?

The abandoned dirt parcel on the corner of Selma and Ivar in Hollywood will be home to a new development in coming years, but in the meantime, it is an open space ripe for activation and placemaking. Sponsored by the Sunset & Vine Business Improvement District, this project blurs the line between public and private space. We designed a public space on private property that blends seamlessly with the sidewalk to inspire conversation about what Hollywood residents, professionals, and visitors would like to see in the community’s public realm.

What stands now is a series of custom built cartoon-like structures that incorporates a range of amenities, such as trees, tables, seating, and wayfinding signage. This project represents a type of fuzzy urbanism that invites a critical conversation on future investments. To unveil the project, a community event took place on a Friday evening featuring interactive boards, take-home photos, a live DJ. This project will be up until 2017 and perhaps even longer.
