An education and advocacy initiative to promote housing for all.
Housing Here is a conversation and workshop series designed to foster community dialogue, increase access to resources, and shape advocacy efforts related to housing in Northeast LA. In the summer of 2021, LA Más hosted one-on-one and small group conversations, as well as a three-part workshop series with over 60 residents. Our team learned about Northeast LA residents’ values and concerns related to housing and new development in the region, and we shared information about the City of Los Angeles’ housing policies and processes (including the 2021 Housing Element Update that was adopted later that fall).
Collective values that surfaced from the conversations include 1) centering family, 2) supporting multi-generational living, and 3) maintaining community character in the neighborhood. The conversations were generative – residents offered solutions they are already using to adapt their housing and make it more affordable, such as sharing space with family or renting to neighbors. We plan to continue these conversations through ongoing neighborhood organizing with resident leaders to refine a collective vision for housing programming and advocacy in Northeast LA.
